Vulture Conservation

The concept of vulture restaurant is a unique concept for the continent Asia. In Europe and Africa, there have been already such restaurants successfully operated to provide safe food for vultures. The main character and success of our activities is that the restaurant for vultures is managed by local communities. Any income generated will be used to manage the restaurant, visitor centre and invested in activities that provide further economic incentives to local or on infrastructure for example Schools, hospitals, and social welfare program like poverty alleviation.

Dead bodies of cattle are collected and put at a place where vultures come to feed on in large numbers. In this process some vultures will be feeding, others will be resting and some flying in the sky. Vulture restaurant includes an observation house in which observers are well concealed from the feeding vultures but will have the advantage of seeing the vultures feeding on a carcass at a close proximity. Visitors enjoy seeing the acrobatics performed by vultures in the area. They will also enjoy seeing more than one variety of vultures and other birds of prey in the vicinity.

We have set up a Visitor Centre to give information to visitors on diverse aspects of these majestic creatures. With your support, the centre will feature other birds, mammals and natural history of the forest. There will be small section to cover the cultural history of the Kumal people, the local inhabitant of the project site.

The final results of this novel approach will have significant output on various sectors eg participatory bio-diversity conservation, valuing religious sentiments, promotion of tourism, education and awareness and economic incentives.

The specific objectives of the project are:

1)      Conserve the Critically Endangered species of vultures and other biodiversity in the area.
2)      Run Vulture Restaurant and a visitor centre under management of the organization with the help of Khairaniban community forest committee.
3)      Promote domestic and international tourism by highlighting the Vulture Restaurant, boating and sunbath on the Kaligandaki River.
4)      Part of economic returns generated to be managed by the organization for improving their livelihood. Some will be kept for maintenance of all the structures.
5)      Capacity building of local people and their engagement in self employment and vulture conservation at grassroots level.
